The Perfect Foundation

Choosing the perfect foundation can be a daunting task. There are a multitude of options to choose from.  Knowing your skin type and your desired look is important when making a choice. This week, we are going to conclude the foundation conversation by discussing their various formulations and compositions (which includes finish and coverage). I want to break it down to the lowest denominator so that you can easily decide which will be the perfect foundation for your makeup routine.

Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizer is part moisturizer and part foundation. It’s a great option for those who want lightweight coverage with a little color payoff. Tinted moisturizers, which usually have an SPF, even out the skin to some degree and is best for those who have clear skin. You can choose to use a moisturizer under your tinted moisturizer. Most importantly, I would still recommend using a primer under it.  Apply with a flat foundation brush.

Liquid Foundation

Liquid foundation is very broad category because it encompasses so many options.  Liquids have varying textures and finishes as well as coverages.  You also have the option to choose from oil-free, oil-based and water-based.  Liquids can suit a multitude of skin types and can be applied with a brush or sponge.

Powder Foundation

Powder foundation is great to use alone, as a  finish or for touch-ups throughout the day.  Like liquid formulations, powder foundations come in variety of  finishes and coverages.  If you have drier skin, it is important to prep with a good moisturizer.  Powders can be buffed with a powder brush for a wash of color, or applied with a sponge for fuller coverage.

Cream to Powder Foundation

This unique formulation starts off as a cream and dries down to a powdery finish.  You can buff this formulation on with a stippling brush. It will give you sheer to medium coverage.  Using a brush with shorter more densely packed bristles will give you fuller coverage.  You can also use this to conceal trouble spots on the face.

Stick Foundation

Stick foundation is a very versatile formulation and very portable. It delivers fuller coverage. However you can spread the formulation out for greater sheer coverage.  It’s fantastic for spot concealing, as well as, using various shades for highlighting and contouring.  Apply directly and blend out with fingers or a brush.

Mousse Foundation

Mousse foundation is very light and airy. It gives a matte cover yet  it has weightless feel on the skin. It can be used on many skin types.  Apply with fingers or a brush.
